HEIC to JPEG XL

Convert HEIC to JPEG XL when you want your iPhone photos in an open, royalty-free format that Chrome, Firefox and Safari display. Don't expect smaller files: a HEIC can't be re-packed the way a JPEG can, so the photo is encoded again. All in your browser.

Good to know

If your HEIC photos only behave properly on Apple devices, JPEG XL is a way out: it is an open, royalty-free format, Safari already supports it, and Chrome 155 and Firefox 158 switched it on by default in October 2026. Converting makes sense when you want to work with JPEG XL, or need your photos to open outside Apple's world in a format with a future.

Be clear about the trade-off, though. A HEIC can't be re-packed the way a JPEG can, so converting means encoding the pixels again. In our 8-photo test, a lossless JPEG XL came out about three times the size of the HEIC, and a lossy one at the default setting about 9% smaller but with slightly lower quality. Convert copies and keep the originals; the whole conversion happens privately in your browser.

FAQ

Why convert HEIC to JPEG XL?
JPEG XL offers HEIC-like compression but is an open standard, not tied to Apple — Safari supports it, and Chrome and Firefox have shown it by default since October 2026 (versions 155 and 158).
Can it stay lossless?
Yes — tick Lossless for an exact copy of the decoded photo, but expect a file about three times the size of the HEIC. The slider gives a file around the size of the HEIC, with a small loss of quality.
Is it free and private?
Yes — free, no sign-up, and your photos never leave your device.
Is JPEG XL as small as HEIC?
Compressing the same original, roughly yes: in our 16-photo test they tied at high quality, HEIC was a little smaller at lower quality and JPEG XL smaller at very high quality. Converting a HEIC you already have won't make it smaller, though.
Lossless or lossy — which should I choose?
Tick Lossless for an exact copy of the decoded photo, knowing it will be much bigger than the HEIC; use the slider when a file around the HEIC's size and a small quality trade-off are fine.
