Windows 10 / 11
Windows doesn't open .jxl out of the box. On Windows 11 24H2 or later, Microsoft's free JPEG XL Image Extension adds thumbnails in File Explorer and lets Photos open them. Otherwise use an app like XnView/IrfanView β or just the viewer above, no install needed. Step by step β

macOS Sonoma 14 and later open .jxl out of the box, and Safari 17 shows it on Monterey and Ventura too (still images only, no animation). On an older Mac, or if a file still won't open, use the viewer above. Step by step β

Chrome / Edge / Firefox
Chrome 155 (6 October 2026) and Firefox 158 (13 October 2026) now show .jxl by default, as Safari 17+ already did β here's what changed in Chrome. Why won't my .jxl file open?
A .jxl file is a JPEG XL image β a modern format that makes files smaller at the same quality. It's perfectly valid; the problem is that many apps, phones and browsers that haven't been updated still don't support it. Google removed JPEG XL from Chrome in 2023 (Chrome 110) and switched it back on by default in Chrome 155 (6 October 2026); Firefox 158 followed on 13 October, and Safari has had it since 2023. Microsoft Edge still won't show your file, though, and neither will an out-of-date browser. There, the reliable fix is to view it with a JPEG XL viewer or convert it.
